HOW TO BECOME A NC NABSE PARTNER

We are seeking the following sponsors:

  • Corporations
  • Small Businesses
  • Churches
  • Greek organizations
  • Service and social organizations

We need partners who are dedicated to becoming actively engaged with schools to provide academic, social and emotional support for students' educational development!

NC NABSE Commissions

NC NABSE Commissions work will serve as solutions to minimize the alarming  high rates of suspensions of  AA students in Charlotte -Mecklenburg Schools.  NABSE Commissions are also  incentives for educators and community to bond together and stay actively engaged to ensure that struggling students experience better success in their academic program.  The commissions are the basic foundation  for NC NABSE thereby providing a structure in which local affiliates can perform their work.

Commissions for NABSE Local Affiliates:

Administration  -- addresses concerns related to the administration  and governance of school districts and focuses on the management of local schools and explores innovative practices related to school operations.  Serve as speakers for school leaders workshops and conferences. Suggested topics: instructional Leadership; Safe School Environment; Minimizing Discipline in Schools--- Workshops & Forums will  be facilitated by talented CMS staff and other experts across the country.

Governance in Education:  examines education policy and develops legislative strategies to address the policy reform priorities of the Alliance.
This sole responsibility of this commission is to ensure that the school board meetings are filled each month with citizens advocating on behalf of voiceless children and families..  Participants  will also have the opportunity to speak on behalf of legislative issues affecting our children and schools.

Instruction and instructional Support:  explores facets of instructional methodologies with emphasis on local school instructional priorities.  Serves as speakers for Parent Forums, MBK CLT Leadership Conferences, Literacy Workshops, etc.

Program Development, Research and Evaluation:  conducts research around educational delivery and academic results; examines critical issues and areas of interest to special educational projects, programs and institutions.  This commission will keep us  informed of  data published by NC Department of Public Instruction regarding discipline and other data related to student achievement.

Retired Educators:  functions to recognize the contributions and talents of retirees. develop programs to enhance the quality of life for the local affiliate members, especially its retirees, and promote financial support for the local affiliate scholarship fund.  The goal of this commission is to grow the membership of  retired personnel  to assist with literacy activities.  Refer to Handout -- "Community Partnerships needed to help Raise Standards and Close Achievement Gaps."

Parents: promotes an open, inclusive and supportive structure for families seeking quality educational services that promote best practice, research-based programs and partnerships for the development of children of African descent.  Conduct ongoing workshops which is the  focus of this commission.  "Empowering Parents to help their children meet high standards of achievement."  The North Carolina Guide for Effective Parenting will be used for Parent, Family and Community Involvement.

Students:  Serves as support and promotes tutoring and mentoring to students in Title I Schools and assist students with other academic events. Affiliate Commission Chair and advisor  will continue their work in assigned schools.  Student affiliate members will serve as mentors and tutors and other work as assigned by NC NABSE Consultant.

Superintendents: provides a forum for information exchange and collaboration among current and former superintendents of public educational systems.  Facilitate workshops for aspiring superintendents and school leaders.   Please  keep all superintendents informed, especially  NC Black superintendents informed of  NABSE's commission work that includes  conferences, workshops and other professional development activities.

Our goal is to have dedicated and committed adults in each commission who maybe school leaders, support staff leaders, teachers, parents, community leaders, retired leaders or anyone who cares and is interested in the learning lives of all children, especially children of African descent.  Membership is opened to everyone.  "Everyone can be great because everyone can serve." MLKing   We  must come together as  United Voices to lobby against those initiatives that are detrimental for our children.  Each organization  or program leader will be the author of their work for solutions.  The commission structure gives us the opportunity to work on projects and themes simultaneously and report at meetings or conference calls.  It is mandatory that commission leaders have agendas and minutes for their meetings.

We are  making a special effort to utilize the leadership of our parents, and community  stakeholders in Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)  which replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  Parents have the power to change systems and they should be included in all phases of this work.  See the last ESSA Implementation meeting held in Charlotte that we are hopeful that will be replicated in other cities in North Carolina.

Read Charlotte Important Initiative

Charlotte Read is a Community Initiative that unites  families, educators and community partners to improve children's literacy from birth to 3rd grade with a goal of doubling reading proficiency from 39% to 80%.  Reading proficiency at third grade is a critical predictor of school, career and life success.  We encourage you to call a school in your community and sign up today to become involved in this reading program.  Reading is also a focus of CLT Charlotte My Brother's Keeper Program.  We provide ongoing professional development activities throughout the year and an Annual Leadership Conference for Males of Color and Educators to enhance literacy.
